You probably wouldn't think that I would be a Thor fan, or a Marvel Comic fan or any type of fan of super heroes and all that, but I am. I love these kind of movies. I loved Thor and The Avengers and all of the X-Men movies - I can't wait for the newest one. Needless to say, I watched Thor: The Dark World that opened in theaters November 8 and I thoroughly enjoyed it - and not just because there's a scene where Chris Hemsworth is half naked, but that was more than enjoyable as well ;).
If you didn't watch the first one, than I will break it down for you a little bit. Thor is the son of Odin, who is the king of Asgard, one of the nine realms. Thor has an adopted brother Loki, who is a Frost Giant half-breed from the planet Jotunheim. The Frost Giants went to war with the Asgardians and the realm perished, except for one baby - Loki - who Odin saved and brought back to live with him and his family. Loki and Thor were raised the same, though Loki wanted to rule the kingdom and Thor was more arrogant, never really listening to commands if he thought his idea was better. Thor was cast out of Asgard and sent to live on Earth as human. On Earth, he finds his strength and learns to work as a team to save Earth, but he also finds his weakness, Jane Porter - his love interest because what's a movie without one? In this movie, both Thor and Loki discover where Loki is from and Loki vies for the throne of Asgard, because he was an heir to the throne of his realm, but it was destroyed. Odin believes that Thor is the heir because Thor is his natural born son. This makes Loki angry and basically he goes rogue from the Asgardians and tries to rule somewhere, becomes a traitor to his family, and is one of the villains in Thor, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World. Loki is sneaky and you never know what he's going to do or who he is going to turn against, though Thor always trusts him. Anyway, Thor saves Earth in his first two movies which brings us to the sequel.
In The Dark World, all the realms have been fighting and are now at peace with each other, except for one. An ancient race, known as the dark elves, resurface to turn all the realms to dark with a secret weapon that Odin's father buried away deep somewhere where "no one could find it." But someone does, and that's what awakens the dark elves from their slumber and brings Thor back to Earth and to Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). He must sacrifice himself for the good of his people because the Asgardians and Odin can not fight this race. With the help of his traitorous brother, Loki, and the science of Jane Foster and her friends, Thor fights to save all the realms and in doing so becomes a traitor himself by defying the authority of the king and his father, Odin.
In the end, as always, the hero gets the girl and saves the world. And yet, does he get the throne, too? No, because he gives it up to do what he loves, fight and do what s right. Only Thor has the hammer, and that hammer can do some damage. When he gives up the throne, he believes Loki to be dead - because he watched him die and so did I - but Loki has the power of sorcery, like their mother Frigga, and can make people believe something that isn't happening - which helped Frigga protect Jane from the dark elves and Thor used it against the dark elves to make them believe that Loki and Thor were on different sides. But, from what happens in the last scene, Loki is one trickster that I can't figure out. Is he good? Is he bad? Did he kill Odin so he can sit on the throne for real? Who knows? There's also some quick wit and fun banter from Kat Dennings, who plays Jane's friend Darcy and Stellan Skarsgard, who plays Dr. Erik Selvig who works with Jane and portrays a very crazy person in this film - seriously he ends up in a psych ward, pretty funny. Anyway, can't wait for the next Thor, and any other super hero flick that's going to be coming out soon - Avengers: Age of Ultron coming out May 2015 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier coming out April 2014.
If you like super hero flicks or if you just like to see Chris Hemsworth half naked and enjoy his deep voice, then you should totally see this movie!
